The Urban Youth Empowerment Program Rise (UYEP Rise) focuses on strategic partnerships with employers; effective hiring of strong, committed program staff; careful attention to the mental health and substance use service needs of participants; and high-quality mentoring and restorative justice project opportunities.

UYEP Rise caters to 18-24 year olds that are ex-offenders or high school drop outs. The program provides:

  • Mentoring
  • Targeted educational and workforce curriculum based on interests
  • Exposure to stipend-paying, real-world opportunities to gain technical and soft skills
  • Connections to community services that bolster the learning process
  • Civic engagement and restorative justice projects

While working 30 hours a week, going to school, and helping out with his younger siblings Karl became involved with UYEP receiving mentoring and workshops. This past school year Karl finished high school graduating from Harper Academy; and in August, he moved in to Langston University to pursue a degree in psychology.
